A Commerce man, accused of running over a woman with a van — twice — has pleaded not guilty to a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Larry D. Harrison, 53, was arraigned on the indictment Monday during a hearing in the 196th District Court. Judge Joe Leonard appointed an attorney to represent Harrison and scheduled an interim hearing for May 26.

Harrison was arrested on the night of Oct. 2, 2007 after officers with the Commerce Police Department responded to a call of an assault in progress in the vicinity of the intersection of Aldridge and Pecan streets in the city.

An off-duty officer with the Princeton Police Department reported he had been following Harrison as he drove a van into Commerce and observed Harrison hitting a passenger inside the vehicle. The female victim was seen getting out of the van, whereupon Harrison allegedly ran over her, backed up and then ran over the victim again.

Officers said they smelled alcohol on Harrison as they took him into custody and found several open bottles of beer inside the van. Another passenger inside the vehicle told officers that Harrison was drunk.

The woman who had allegedly been struck by the van refused treatment for her injuries.

Harrison was indicted on the charge last month by the Hunt County grand jury. The indictment also lists two prior felony convictions for Harrison, both from Tarrant County, for the aggravated possession of amphetamine in 1987 and for burglary in 1980.
