Article 5--Some thing of interest--Penny Harvest

So this guy, Teddy Gross, is the founder of Penny Harvest. He decided that he wanted to collect unwanted pennies and do some good with them, feed the homeless. He has collected over SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS in PENNIES only. He had an event in NY where he put a million dollars of pennies together. I saw all of this in a commercial. My very first thought was "WOW, how cool would it be to photograph THAT." So I looked him up.

Article 4-Who Pays for the Octuplets?

So I read this article this morning about the woman with 14 kids. I also watch the NBC interview and I can't think of words that describe the feelings that come about when reading this. It honestly makes me sick to my stomach that:
1. all of her children are invitro
2. there is a doctor who would do this
3. that she is saying that she is not manipulating the system
4. she would be allowed to have more kids when she can't take care of the ones she has already, some of which already have disablities (autism)

She is an unemployed, single mother, who has been on disability for 10 years and the payments have now stopped. She now has 14 kids, 6 of which are between the ages of 2 and 7 and two of those (1 for sure-1 with tendensies) have autism. She plans on helping pay for them with student loans while she finishes her masters degree. SERIOUSLY!?!?!?! There are those of us that have one child and a spouse that are struggling to make it through school on student loans and jobs so that we can afford to pay for our family. and you know what...we don't "qualilfy" for assistance because we are actually trying to help our selves. This should be a wake up call to the government that the welfare system is being taken advantage of. These kind of programs are for people that have come on hard times to make it through until things get better. This woman had a lot of money paid to her in disability (because of a back injury) wouldn't it have made better sense to finish school and then go make babies. I know you may be thinking-if any of you are actually reading this-you aren't done with school and you have a kid. Well you know..I do, BUT accidents happen. I am married, have a wonderful husband who does more than I could ever ask of him so that I can finish school, and I only have ONE, not 14. She went to the Dr. and had treatments to purposely have these children .

It really pisses me off that this was allowed to happen. Something should be done with these kids. It is obvious that this woman is not in her right mind and cannot take care of what she has let alone 8 babies.

Oh and her plan to help pay for them, DONATIONS from her website from people that feel sorry for her. Maybe I am just cold hearted, but I feel discusted not sorry. She did this to herself she needs to deal with it herself and if she can't then the kids need to go to someone who can.

Article 3

So I came across this artist while i was looking for invitations for my son's birthday party, I know random, but I thought it was very interesting. I think that the stoves at the bottem are my favorite. That may be because it took me a second to see the person in it. I don't really have deep thoughts about this work. You can tell he puts a lot of time into it so I thought I would spread some of his hard work.

Laurent La Gamba (b. 1967) is an artist, photographer, and video artist interested in pro-crypsis (camouflage) La Gamba’s projects span a variety of in situ installations, performances and photographic installations to look at Procrypsis in relationship to the world of urban space and technology. His work aims at creating a kind of urban camouflage (“homochromie”in French) that mimics what is naturally found in nature with Procrypsis, using painting, photography and video as a tool. This background explains the term for his work: Pro-cryptic Photography.
La Gamba's work is based on this utilization of the urban space as a reflection on the self and explores through identification processes the chromatic response of the human body to the urban environment. He is known for his public supermarket camouflage photographs (Pet food, 2002) and for his peculiar use of consumer appliance objects extracted from their original environment and camouflaged into a natural setting (Open fridge, 2002). He carried out several works-in-progress based on audiovisual performances conducted under the action of camera circling (Full open fridges, 2003).
Previously, La Gamba studied literature at the Sorbonne/Paris, specializing in the clinical aspects of French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan’s work. He began his work with photo-realistic self-portraits (One hundred Self-portraits, 1999). He received a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and since 2002 holds an artist-in-residence position at the La Napoule Art Foundation.

So, I found this article from Detroit Free Press, and I thought it was very interesting. Obviously the title kinda stood out and caught my attention, so I let my curiosity wander. I liked the guy's attitude. He doesn't care if you like his work or hate it, as long as you have an opinion he is happy. I looked up his website to see his work and I think I like it. It is probably not something I would have hanging on my wall in my house, but I definitely has a very unique look to it. I haven't yet but I plan on looking up the photographers that he mentioned in the article that have influenced his work.

Article 1

This is an article about the Art Fair going on in Dallas this weekend. I thought it was interesting to see soe of the planning efforts that went into this. It is not only artist from the area, but from all over the United States. I think that if I were an artist living off of what I sold, I would have the same viewpoint that they put in the article, that iot just makes more sense to get out there to sow your work instead of waiting on people to show up at your gallery or on your website looking to buy something. I thought it was kind of funny too that they metioned there would be really bad stuff there, too. It seems to me that it is being more marketed as an event to go hang out and see than a sohw.
