Article 15--Swine Flu

Personally I think the whole thing is being blown out of proportion. The regular old flu kills several thousand people a year. So yeah, 100-something out of a city of 2 million is really not that impressive of a number if you ask me. Putting the world into a panic is absurd. You probably have a better chance of being killed in a car accident.

State: Four swine flu cases confirmed

Birmingham Business Journal - by Cindy F. Crawford Staff

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Monday that Alabama has four confirmed cases of the swine flu.

Of the confirmed cases, three are in Madison County and one is in Montgomery. The Alabama Department of Public Health reported another nine probable cases, including one in Jefferson County.

The state health department reported that the Jefferson County case is in an “adult,” while most of the cases are students in Madison City Schools, a Madison County school, the University of Alabama at Huntsville Pre-School Learning Center and St. John the Baptist Catholic School, also in Madison.

Another possible adult case is reported in Montgomery County.

Madison city schools, Harvest Elementary and St. John are closed until May 14 to prevent the flu’s spread. The University of Alabama at Huntsville Pre-School Learning Center will reopen May 11.

The health department’s clinical laboratories received more than 300 specimens from health care providers, the state said. The health department laboratory is prioritizing specimens based on the symptoms of the patients.

To address the swine flu situation, a portion of the Strategic National Stockpile of antiviral drugs and supplies have been sent to regional locations in public health areas throughout the state.
